A Legacy of Resilience: UNDP Hands Over State-of-the-Art Hospital Infrastructure and Rehabilitated College Facilities to CBC

UNDP and CBC giving Thumbs Up to Each Other for a Job Welldone

The Cameroon Baptist Convention (CBC) has reached a significant milestone in its mission to provide quality healthcare and education with the formal reception of two major infrastructure projects funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In a ceremony marked by deep gratitude and technical pride, the UNDP officially handed over the newly constructed Outpatient Department (OPD) at Ndu Baptist Hospital and the rehabilitated classroom blocks at Chaffee Memorial Baptist College, Kumbo.

The event, which took place at the Baptist Center in Bamenda on April 29, 2026, brought together the top leadership of the Cameroon Baptist Convention (CBC), UNDP regional coordinators, and community beneficiaries who described the new developments as a transformative “gift” that brings essential services closer to the people.

The G+2 structure at Ndu Baptist Hospital, covering a total surface area of 1,560 square meters, is an engineering feat designed to provide a “psychosomatic cure” through its spacious and clean environment. The ground floor features a functional flow including a covered drop-off bay, registration and payment offices, a treatment and injection unit, and a pharmacy. Moving away from the era of congested wards, the first floor is dedicated to specialized care with separate wards for children, men, and women.

The second floor serves as the administrative hub of the hospital, containing modern offices and a large meeting hall. This innovation, as noted by the Director of Health Services, Mr. Ngum Samuel, was made possible through a strong financial collaboration where the CBC complemented UNDP funding to ensure the building met the specific needs of the hospital.

The UNDP Regional Coordinator for the North West Region, Mme Mary Nyuyinui commended the CBC Health Services for its transparency and the “highest satisfaction” delivered throughout the 15-month project timeline. She emphasized that the churches have played a strategic role in proving that the reconstruction concept works even in difficult contexts.

This sentiment was echoed during the handover of Chaffee Memorial Baptist College, where the rehabilitation of classrooms has already led to a significant increase in student attendance. The Education Secretary, Dr. Atanga Naphalie confirmed that the department is fully prepared to maintain these facilities to ensure they stand the test of time.

Beneficiaries, including the Hospital Senior Administrator of Ndu Baptist Hospital, Mr. Nji Richard Nkeh, expressed emotional relief, noting that the staff will no longer have to hold morning devotions in the laundry room, as the hospital now has the space it truly deserves. He noted that the new space is essential for safety, as previously, overcrowding made “spacing” difficult, creating a risk where patients might contract new illnesses while seeking care. The new structure allows for proper infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols.

Talking on behalf of the people of Ndu, the former Mayor of Ndu Council, Mbunwe Emmanuel expressed deep gratitude to UNDP for their role in the construction of the physical structure and to the CBC Health Services for their commitment to bringing quality healthcare to the community. There is a clear expectation that the new facility will significantly increase patient volume. The Administrator pointed out that the reputation of the services is already so strong that patients bypass other health providers to seek care there.

Mr. Samuel Ngum, Director of CBC Health Services, in an interview session, noted that the plan is to have clean energy in the future, solar energy that supplies the facility in Ndu without any hitches.  He called on everyone to make use of the facility given that it is for the community. “When the CBC has services anyway, it is so that there is that huge community engagement. One of our main missions is evangelization, in order that they may be brought to God,” he added.

In his closing remarks, the CBC Executive President (EP), Rev. Dr. Teke John Ekema framed the occasion as a fulfillment of the Convention’s holistic mission. He remarked that in a landscape often marked by desperation, these buildings serve as a reminder that God has not abandoned His people. By providing quality infrastructure alongside committed personnel and modern technology, the CBC is securing a healthier and more productive future for generations to come. The EP then prayed and dedicated the structures to God for use.

The facilities are now fully operational and open to the community, standing as tall evidence to what can be achieved through faith, accountability, and international partnership.
