The Equality Project convened 15 young people living with HIV, selected to receive funding for various income-generating activities at the Nkwen Baptist Center on April 8, 2025. They were to confirm with the project team their desired activity, and be supported with the necessary resources to begin their endeavors. Days after, a group of dedicated trainers for these young people also gathered at the Nkwen Baptist Center to orient themselves on essential skills for working with young people living with HIV.
The orientation for the trainers began with a comprehensive overview of HIV basics, ensuring they understood the unique challenges faced by their trainees. Following this, they were introduced to effective methods for monitoring progress, allowing them to track the development of each young person throughout the training. The trainers signed contracts, reinforcing their commitment to this vital cause, and establishing a framework for routine follow-ups to assess the trainees’ advancements.
The first session, which took place in 2024, successfully engaged ten trainees, has set a promising precedent for continuing these activities. The enthusiasm and dedication demonstrated by both trainers and trainees have inspired a renewed commitment to fostering skills that enhance well-being and self-sufficiency.

Grace, a current beneficiary expressed her delight at being selected for this year’s cohort. “I saw how those selected last year were trained and now I see how their lives have improved. They are happier and more hopeful. I want to feel like that too,” she excitedly said.
Monitoring trainee progress is crucial for the success of the IGA program. The use of diverse assessment methods, combined with targeted feedback and support, allows trainers to identify areas for improvement early on. This proactive approach ensures that each trainee receives the guidance needed to thrive. Progress tracking not only fosters accountability but also culminates in a well-deserved certification that acknowledges their hard work and dedication. “I will do my best to help my trainee because I want to see him fulfilled and have food to eat, and a shelter over his head,” declared Anthony, a carpenter and trainer. In conclusion, the first session of training has laid a strong foundation for future initiatives. By employing a comprehensive assessment strategy and providing consistent support, we can empower these young individuals to manage their well-being and pursue successful ventures in income generation. The journey towards skill development and certification is not just about training; it is about transforming lives and building a brighter future. Within the year, the project team will carry out a series of supervision and mentoring activities to ensure the young people are being properly equipped to face their futures with certainty and glee.
