Two-Year Rehabilitation Technician Course Kicks-Off at BSPH Mutengene
A two-year Rehabilitation Technician Course kicked off on February 8, 2022 at the Baptist School for Public Health (BSPH). Some 14 students are currently undertaking the Diploma Rehabilitation Technician course. The Dean of Studies of BSHP, Mr. Nkuoh Godlove explained that the diploma course stems from a feasibility study conducted by the Liliane Foundation which gaps in rehabilitative services in the country were discovered.
With the increasing need of rehabilitative services, the survey discovered that services were sub standard because the providers were not adequately trained and limited in areas like Physiotherapy (PT), Occupational Therapy, (OT), and Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR). The funders therefore recommended the need of programs to scale up the training of personnel working in those areas so as to make life worth living for persons with rehabilitative conditions.
During the first week of the training, the students were orientated on issues patterning to the foundational courses. A visiting lecturer from the University of Zimbabwe, Dr. Mildred Chikwanha, an Occupational Therapist started lectures with students. It is worth noting that the course curriculum was developed by the University of Zimbabwe while faculty members will come from Zimbabwe and Cameroon.
Dr. Chikwanha revealed that the two-year Diploma Course is a combination of P.T, speech therapy and occupational therapy and is divided in four semesters. The first semester covers the basic sciences that introduces the trainees to the science related to human development, health and disability as well as the foundational courses in Rehabilitation. The 2nd and 3rd semesters embody the clinical aspect where trainees will be assessing the rehabilitation need and managing them appropriately using the techniques that they will be introduced to during the training. In the fourth and last semester, the student will do a community attachment in any primary health care facility in the country.
Talking about the ability of BSPH to accommodate the course, the Dean of Studies said they are partnering with the Baptist Hospital Mutengene to carry out the clinical aspects of the course. “We are expecting the students to be committed,” he concluded.
