The Baptist Convention’s Vision for Higher Education in Cameroon
In a bold move to shape the future of Cameroon, is taking a significant step towards a long-held dream: the establishment of a Baptist University. Dr. Helga Nsang Jam, speaking at the recent Baptist National Ministers Conference, announced the creation of two key higher institutes paving the way for this future university. These institutes, approved by the Ministry of Higher Education, offer exciting educational opportunities for Cameroonians seeking professional growth and a chance to contribute to their communities:
The Baptist Higher Institute of Professional Studies (BHIPS), Mvan, Yaounde
BHIPS caters to those seeking careers in various fields beyond healthcare and will offer a diverse range of professional programs, including Hotel and Tourism Management, Information and Communication Technology, Vocational Guidance and Counseling, and Professional Secretarial Studies and Administration. These courses are designed to provide students with the specialized skills and knowledge needed to excel in their chosen fields. Entry requirements vary depending on the chosen program.
The Baptist School of Public Health (BSPH), Mutengene
BSPH will focus on medical and health-related disciplines, offering degrees in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Health and Social System Management, Human Nutrition and Clinical Dietetics, Public Health, and Nursing & Midwifery. This school aims to address the pressing need for qualified healthcare professionals in the country and beyond.
Dr. Jam emphasized the transformative potential of these institutions, stating that they are a long-awaited dream for the Baptist Convention. She encouraged the ministers and the church to embrace this vision, recognizing the church’s responsibility to drive development and create a more reliable system that empowers future generations.
The vision extends beyond just the two institutes, with plans for the Baptist University’s first Faculty of Rehabilitation Center of Excellence. This center, supported by the #afasfoundation, will also offer programs in Physiotherapy, Community-Based Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation Technician, and Occupational Therapy, providing specialized training in the field of rehabilitation.
Dr. Jam’s remarks underscored the church’s commitment to training professionals who will infiltrate all disciplines within Cameroon and abroad, driving mission and development efforts. By equipping the congregation with the necessary spiritual and intellectual gifts, the church aims to transform society and reduce unemployment, ultimately realizing the dream of the church leading the way in development, rather than relying on the government.
The Cameroon Baptist Convention’s foray into higher education marks a significant step in the church’s journey to empower the next generation and shape the future of Cameroon and Africa as a whole. As the construction of the Baptist University’s first faculty nears completion, the anticipation and excitement around these educational initiatives continue to grow, promising a brighter future for all.
