Nkwen Baptist Hospital Dedicates New Eye Surgical Unit

Eye Department Staff ready to begin services

Patients with eye challenges needing surgical procedures will no longer have to wait till Wednesdays for their eye surgeries, as the Nkwen Baptist Hospital, NBH, has fully equipped its new modern eye theater. Taking place at the hospital’s newly constructed Block C, the Administrator, Chaplain, Head of Eye Department and other team members dedicated the eye theater, May 16 2025.

The Nkwen Baptist Hospital’s eye department is widely known for their unique quality care services which span diverse operations, amidst the lack of adequate space they battled with. Having to share same space with the General theater did not stop them from providing the best services to all in need. Not being able to carry out surgeries daily was a challenge that the Administrator, Mme Faith Tangwa, dedicated herself to solving. She was determined to get the eye department a new modern surgical unit, and she did!

“Patients no longer have to wait days before being operated upon. We care very much about our clients’ welfare and this will help them to cut cost,” she said. “We are happy to have realized this dream to satisfy our clients especially those that travel from far,” she added. Having a single day slated for eye surgeries was quite challenging to some patients. It involved long waiting hours and extra money spent for those who would get into town over the weekend, while waiting for Wednesday. Thanks to this new eye theater, waiting time and cost of waiting will reduce, thus improving their health.

The modern eye surgical unit is well equipped to handle all sorts of cases not just because of the new equipment but because of the dedicated staff which includes an experienced ophthalmologist. He returns from the USA with a wealth of knowledge to improve the eyes of the general public with the introduction of Oculoplastic surgery, a unique service offered uniquely at the Nkwen Baptist Hospital.

Ma Anna (pseudonym), a mother about to be operated upon in the new block says she is very privileged to be the first person to be attended to in the eye theater “I pray that God will bless any person who passes through this eye theater to get the solution to their problems,” she prayed. Her procedure was successful. She is one of many cases which will be handled in the new unit. Others will include but not limited to eye injuries, accidents etc. “If a child is playing and has an injury in the eye or foreign bodies have penetrated your eyes, these can all be repaired,” encouraged Mr. Luchia Johnson, head of the Eye Department, NBH, and a member of the ORI team. Every eye challenge can be handled.

As the administrator inaugurated the unit and equipment, she called out saying, “The hospital is advancing and we wish to invite everyone to come for our specialized doctors and services. This eye theater will save you and your family”. It should be noted that the Nkwen Baptist Hospital is your one-stop shop for all eye concerns, be they for routine check ups or other challenges.
