“Rehabilitation Compass for Inclusion (RCI)” Project
Overall Objective
Improve Availability and Access to Quality Rehabilitation Services in Cameroon for children, youths and adults with disabilities through the training of professional rehabilitation workers in Physiotherapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT) and Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR).
Background
15% of population of Cameroon are children, youths and adults with disabilities who often experience inadequate and poor quality rehabilitation services as a result of:
- Huge crises in available and well trained healthcare personnel (1 doctor per 100,000 inhabitants; 8 nurses and midwives per 100,000 people)
- The situation is worse when it comes to rehabilitation services such as PT, OT and CBR
- Only a total of 350 Physiotherapist in Cameroon (0.10 PT per 10,000 inhabitants)
- No Occupational Therapy exists in Cameroon
- No Formal Training in Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR)
Project Intervention
With funding from AFAS Foundation through the Liliane Fonds, CBCHS is partnering with national and international state universities and training institutions to start the following courses:
- Bachelor and Masters programs in physiotherapy
- Bachelor and Masters Programs in occupational therapy
- Certificate course in community based rehabilitation
