Overview

Nkwen Baptist Hospital was created on May 2, 1979 as a dispensary and was finally upgraded into a full health centre in 1989.  The NBH is strategically located at the heart of health care provision in the capital city of the Northwest Region of Cameroon.

The modern infrastructure has 207 bed capacity, and about 640 staff who attend to an average total of 10,879 patients monthly at the OPD  and 567 admissions monthly as at January 2026.  The hospital boosts of a specialist doctor in orthopedics, two dentists and 34 nurses. NBH operates 24/7, carries out major surgeries and does admission in all the wards; children, women and men.

Eye Care Services

The Eye Department provides comprehensive eye care under the supervision of a resident ophthalmologist and dedicated staff. Services include:

  • Outpatient consultations

  • Ocular coherent tomography

The department attends to approximately 1,500 patients monthly.

Dental Services

The Dental Unit offers a wide range of preventive, restorative, and surgical services, including:

  • Root Canal Therapy (RCT)
  • Extractions and fillings
  • Tooth restoration
  • Dentures and crowns (partial/Comlete, fixed/Removal)
  • Maxilla facial surgeries
  • Minor and major oral surgeries (e.g., cystectomy, frenectomy, operculectomy)

HIV and AIDS Care and Treatment

Comprehensive HIV services include:

  • Enrolment and follow up of HIV+ clients

  • Index case finding of biological and sexual contacts
  • Post exposure prophylaxis
  • Testing and follow up of HIV pregnant women and their babies
  • Support group sessions including pregnant/breast feeding young girls, high viral

Pharmacy Services

The Pharmacy Department ensures the safe and effective use of medications through:

  • Outpatient and clinical pharmacy services

  • Procurement and supply chain management
Laboratory Services

NBH laboratory is a Four-Star rated facility offering a wide range of diagnostic and preventive services. These include:

  • Reception, registration, and specimen collection
  • Testing and quality control of test kits
  • HIV testing and TB testing
  • Premarital screening
  • Donor screening and blood collection and blood banking
  • Viral load sample reception
  • Printing of test results
  • Routine machine maintenance and biosafety protocols
  • Health talks and clinical presentations
  • Daily cleaning and disinfection of laboratory units
  • Reagent requisition, stock counts, and documentation
Women’s Health Program (WHP)

Dedicated to promoting women’s health through:

  • HPV Vaccination
  • Treatment of pre-cancer
  • Breast cancer screening/True cut Biopsies 
  • HPV DNA testing and colposcopy
  • Cervical and breast cancer screening
  • STI testing and syndromic management
  • Family planning services
  • Fertility workups
Nutrition improvement

This program provides dietary counseling, health education, practical food demonstrations, menu planning, and nutrition feed formulation. It focuses on managing malnutrition and promoting healthy living. The department also processes soya powder (NIPSOYA), assesses nutritional status, and implements preventive strategies to improve community nutrition.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The NICU manages premature babies from 25 to 37 weeks of gestation. Services include:

  • Incubator care
  • Antibiotic therapy
  • Feeding support
  • Kangaroo Mother Care
  • Regular paediatric monitoring
  • Follow-up visits after discharge
  • Phototherapy
  • Exchange blood transfusion

With 6 incubators, 8 staff members, and 1 paediatrician, the unit has successfully managed babies as young as 27 weeks with weights starting from 720 grams.

Community Based Rehabilitation

The CBR Unit supports persons with disabilities through:

  • Identification and referrals
  • Home support visits
  • Rehabilitation interventions
  • Advocate for persons with disabilities
  • Provision of assistive devices
  • Support of school fees/surgeries, medical bills through EID
Woundcare and Treatment

Services include:

Chaplaincy Services

The Chaplaincy Department supports the spiritual well-being of staff and patients. Activities include: Bible studies, daily devotions at the hospital chapel, prayer sessions with staff, and bedside devotions for patients in the Outpatient Department (OPD), wards, and antenatal clinics.

The chaplains provide counseling for patients with terminal illnesses, end-of-life care, premarital counseling, and marital counseling. They also work closely with doctors to support clients with chronic and terminal conditions. Choirs and gospel groups are often invited to minister in the wards and chapel. The department ensures that spiritual values are integrated into all hospital programs and activities.

Outreach & Sensitization

NBH conducts regular health outreach and awareness campaigns on non-communicable diseases (NCDs), disability inclusion, and other public health issues.

Health insurance

The hospital collaborates with insurance companies that have signed MOUs with CBC Health Services, ensuring coverage for staff and community members.

Mental Health Services

The Mental Health Department provides assessment, treatment, and support for patients with:

  • Depression, anxiety, and psychotic disorders
  • Epilepsy and sleep disorders
  • Substance abuse and dementia
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child and adolescent behavioral disorders
  • Developmental delays and somatic symptoms

The department also provides psychotherapy, medication management, suicide prevention, community outreach, home visits, and sensitization programs.

Maternal and Child Care

Services include:

  • Antenatal care (consultations, physical exams, lab investigations, dietary counselling, and health education)
  • Infant welfare clinics (growth monitoring, vaccinations)
Physiotherapy Services

The Physiotherapy Unit supports recovery and mobility through:

  • Therapeutic and rehabilitation exercises
  • Manual therapy and massage
  • Electrotherapy and thermotherapy
  • Casting for fractures and dislocations
  • Clubfoot management
  • Rehabilitation for conditions such as cerebral palsy and Parkinson’s disease
Imaging Services (Ultrasound, X-Ray, and ECG)

The Imaging Unit provides advanced diagnostic support, including:

  • X-rays (chest, pelvic, lumbosacral, extremities, skull and cervical
  • Special exams (Hysterosalpingography, Barium studies, Uretrocystography), Fistulography
  • Ultrasound (obstetric, abdominal, pelvic, small parts, vascular ultrasound studies, cardiac, trans-fontanel)
Social Services Department

Her main role is to help the vulnerable and needy to navigate through their challenges. In this regard, the department carries out the following services:

  • Assessment and identifying of needy clients
  • Carry out counselling with clients: Depression, anxiety, GBV, Financial challenges, Bereavement, stress, child abuse, abandonment, lifestyle modification, adolescent crisis, elder person’s crisis

  • Liaison with family
  • Temperament and personality disorders assessments
  • Awareness creation and sensitisation of social ills
