BMZ, CBM, donates Medical Equipment worth about 35 million CFA to CHU Yaoundé

The Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Department of the Yaoundé University Teaching Hospital (CHU) will offer improved ENT services to the population,; thanks to the donation of medical equipment worth at about 35 million, donated by the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany, and the Christian Blind Mission (CBM), in partnership with CBC Health Services. The equipment were donated within the context of the “Strengthening Ear and Hearing Care Capacities in Cameroon Project,” implemented by CBC Health Services.

The handing over ceremony took place on March 3, 2026, in the CHU Conference Hall and was attended by the CHU Director General and administrative staff, the CBM Country Director, the CBM Project Officer for Ear and Hearing Care, and the CBC Health Services Project staff led by the Project Clinical Supervisor and Coordinator. The equipment was handed over by the CBM Country Director, Mr. Fon Julius, to the Director General of CHU, Professor Vincent de Paul Njientcheu.

At the start of the event, the CBM Country Director, Mr. Fon Julius expressed gratitude to be part of this strategic activity that is symbolic to CBM. He disclosed that CBM is a German organization that has been supporting health interventions in Cameroon since 1972.  He added that CBM is working to ensure the prevention and management of disabilities in Cameroon through its implementing partners like the CBC Health Services.  Mr. Fon further highlighted that it is the first time BMZ and CBM are supporting a project on specialized Ear and Hearing Care in Cameroon. He underscored that when the project was training audiology technicians in Cameroon, trainees expressed the need for equipment to practice in order to complement the knowledge acquired.

“We are here today to donate this equipment as a response to your concerns with the hope that the population will benefit from improved and affordable ear and hearing care services,” he emphasized. The CBM boss hopes that the capacity to manage ear and hearing care in Cameroon will be further complemented by the equipment donated.

The Director General of CHU, Professor Vincent de Paul Njientcjeu, while receiving the equipment, expressed gratitude to BMZ, CBM, and the CBC Health Services for supporting the institution in offering quality care to the population. He described the equipment as modern and sophisticated machines that will meet the needs of patients. Professor Vincent de Paul appreciated the Head of Department for ENT at CHU, Professor Djomou Francois, who has worked hard to ensure a successful partnership between CHU and the CBC Health Services. He used the occasion to encourage other HODs to seek more fruitful partnerships that can benefit the institution.  

The Project Clinical Supervisor, Dr. Acha Everistus explained to the staff the technicalities of the equipment and how to effectively manage them. One of the ENT staff was visibly satisfied with the equipment, which they have longed for, given that it will greatly facilitate their work.

The equipment comprised a laptop, diagnostic audiometer, video otoscope, 60 hearing aids, hand drill, a soundproof cabin, microscope, and tympanometer, just to name a few. During the ceremony, CHU signed on the following terms:

  • To maintain the equipment in good working condition
  • To ensure proper use of ear and hearing care services
  • To report and document damage, loss, or malfunction to CBCHS
  • To share quarterly usage and performance reports with CBCHS

It should be noted that the same donation would be made to Mboppi Baptist Hospital and Mbingo Baptist Hospital.
