Created on October 9, 2000, Mboppi Baptist Hospital (MBH) is one of the prestigious hospitals of the Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Services (CBCHS). It has been widely acclaimed as offering exceptional health services in the Cameroonian cosmopolitan economic capital Douala. The hospital dominates popular medical institutions in Douala in terms of qualitative services offered, staff, infrastructure and offering exceptional health services. The hospital boosts of 14 specialist, 2 general surgeons, 2 cardiologist, 2 gynecologists, 2 pediatricians, 1 ophthalmologists, 2 dentists.

Dental Services: Mboppi Baptist Hospital Dental Department attends to dental problems of the patients. Procedures carried out in this service include:

  • Extraction,
  • Fillings,
  • Root canal treatment,
  • Scaling and polishing (cleaning),
  • Prosthesis (dentures, full and partial),
  • Minor oral surgeries (wiring, operculectomy) and
  • Dental X-ray service.

Eye Care: The Eye Department of Mboppi Baptist Hospital has a resident ophthalmologist well furnished with ultra-modern machines to detect and handle various eye-related problems. The services include:

  • Daily consultations,
  • Management of common eye conditions,
  • Eye surgery,
  • Automated visual field testing,
  • Slit lamp biomicrospic examinations,
  • Refraction and dispensing of glasses, and
  • Referral of complicated retinal cases.

Treatment and Injection Services: The Treatment and Injection Services is divided into three rooms and performs the following functions:

  • Offer observation for patients on infusion fluids on day care basis,
  • Injection room for the administration of injections as prescribed by the screeners and doctor,
  • Incision and drainage (I&D).
  • Wound care clinic

Clinical Imaging (Ultrasound): The Clinical Imaging (Ultrasound) service examines the body organs and various Procedures carried out in the unit include:

  • Pelvic scan,
  • Obstetric scan,
  • Abdominal scan for both male and female,
  • Prostate scan,
  • Testicular scan,
  • Breast scan,
  • Thyroid scan.
  • Vascular scan of lower extremities for DVT,
  • Neonatal head scan for hydrocephalus,

Pharmacy Services: MBH Pharmacy services is specialized in distributing drugs as prescribed by doctors to patients. The over 30 competent staff made of a pharmacist, 4 technicians, pharm dentists of this department work round the clock and provide the following pharmaceutical services:

  • Drug dispensing to patients as prescribed by screeners and doctors,
  • Compounding of some ointments and extemporaneous preparations,
  • Counselling and education of clients on drug usage, storage, their right sources and side effects on patients,
    • Patient counselling on some long term diseases like diabetes, hypertension, asthma, glaucoma.
    • Drug store which serves as the hospital pharmaceutical supply unit.

    HIV & AIDS work. Mboppi Baptist Hospital (MBH) is an approved site for the diagnosis of AFB (Tuberculosis test) in sputum and other body substances. MBHM is approved by government for the provision of care and treatment to people living with HIV & AIDS. This programme offer the following services:

    • The Prevention of Mother to child Transmission (PMTCT)
    • Care and Treatment services (C &T).
    • The Care and Treatment Centre has its own laboratory with specialized equipment for immunology, biochemistry and haematology for care and treatment of HIV & AIDS and a host of other tests.

 Laboratory Services:  The Laboratory Services of MBH runs a major and well equipped laboratory manned by over 28 qualified and ever ready staff, who attend to over 8,000 patients every month. The tests carried out in the laboratory include:

  • Serology tests,
  • Parasitology/mycology tests,
  • Biochemistry with newly acquired machines,
  • Haematology tests with newly acquired Haemotology machine,
  • Micro bacteriology and culture tests
  • Gene expert for children born of HIV positive mothers,
  • Culture and sensitivity tests.

Physiotherapy: The Physiotherapy department of the MBH has a seasoned physiotherapist who uses physical agents and methods to help maintain and restore good health in over 800 patients on monthly bases, with various physical problems like:

  • Back-pain (topping the list),
  • Arthritic conditions,
  • Erb’s palsy (weakness of mostly one arm in children due to birth complications),
  • Neck-pain,
  • Nerve injuries,
  • Fractures,

The Services offered to patients include: 

  • Consultation and postural evaluation,
  • Massage therapy,
  • Myofacial release,
  • Stretching of contractures,
  • Cryotherapy (cold packs, ice massage),
  • Casting,
  • Splinting (shoulder sling, wrist, knee, ankle, back support, figure of 8),
  • Crutch training,
  • Crutch care and repair,
  • Crutch tips,
  • Education on back care,
  • Neck care,
  • Traction (cervical traction),
  • Therapeutic exercises for patients,
  • Keep-fit exercises for non-patients,
  • Electrotherapy (electrical stimulation),
  • Correction of club feet,
  • Cell’s palsy and stroke rehabilitation,

  • Chest therapy.

Maternal and Child Health Services: The hospital runs a well-organized maternity that offers delivery services to the clients. The MBH has a gynecology, obstetrics Lab and a general surgery Lab. This department of the hospital offers the following services:

  • Antenatal services to expectant mothers.
  • The ANC section has many midwives who take care of pregnant women
  • Takes care of family planning,
  • Infant welfare clinics,
  • Child vaccinations,
  • Labour and delivery
  • Post prefum care
  • Premature nursery

Women’s Health Programme: MBHD’s Women’s Health Programme specializes in providing solutions to health problems unique to women. Since inception, it has recorded a minimum of 20 patients with a monthly average of at least 400. The programme has four components namely:

  • Breast cancer screening,
  • Cervical Cancer screening,
  • Syndrome management of reproductive tract infection,
  • Family planning. 

The procedures and services carried out include:

  • Screening for breast /cervical cancer,
  • Vaccination against cervical cancer of women age range 9 – 55 years
  • Treatment of pre-cancers (Cryotherapy and Loop Electro-surgical Excision Procedure, LEEP, thermal coagulation)
  • Biopsy,
  • Treatment of common reproductive tract infections, and
  • Mobile Clinic.

Tuberculosis Clinic: MBHD is a government approved site for the treatment of Tuberculosis (TB). Over 126 patients are tested each month. TB patients who come to the hospital are offered the following services:

  • Consultation,
  • Prescription/dispensing of TB medications,
  • Counselling and testing for HIV,
  • Adherence counselling for TB medication,
  • Referral of HIV positive cases to the treatment centre for care and treatment,
  • Management of minor side effects of drugs,
  • Referral of patients to other TB diagnostic and treatment centres,
  • Calls are made for the follow up of those on treatment,
  • At least 126 patients are tested each month
  • General tested cases are followed till declared TB case or not,
  • Children of +TB cases case less than 5 years are given prphylaxes.

Diabetes Services: The Diabetes Clinic of MBHD cater for the needs of patients living with diabetes. Screening for diabetes is still carried out on other days in spite of these particular days chosen for mass screening. Patients who visit the department receive the following services:

  • Consultation and checking of blood pressure (BP),
  • Treatment,
  • Weight control,
  • Referral of some cases to the doctor,
  • Registration and collection of data,
  • Health education,
  • Fasting blood sugar test.
  • The clinic attends to over 250 patients monthly for refills
  • over 35 new cases are diagnosed monthly.

Chaplaincy / Social services: This services of MBH is. The department’s chaplains and social workers perform the following activities:

  • Responsible for the spiritual and psychosocial needs of both patients and staff of the hospital
  • Coordination of separate daily devotions for both staff and patients,
  • Organizing Bible studies,
  • counselling with care and treatment defaulters,
  • Psycho-spiritual support to clients and adherence counseling
  • Visiting staff and offering psychosocial and psycho-spiritual counselling, and
  • Follow-up of patients.
  • Pre-marital and post marital counseling to staff and clients
  • Pre operation and post operation counseling to clients
  • Palliative care involvement,
  • Pastoral care to the grieving
  • Conflict management within staff.

Maintenance Services: The maintenance service of MBH is responsible for maintenance services in the hospital. The staff strength is made up of competent technicians with diverse skills. They render the following services:

  • Plumbing,
  • Electricity,
  • Motor mechanics/driving,
  • Masonry,
  • Carpentry

Security Services: The Security services of MBH is responsible for security at the establishment. Over 21 well trained, uniformed and dynamic security guards of the hospital are present round the clock and performing the following services:

  • Maintaining order and
  • Keeping clients, staff, and their belongings safe.
  • Keep track of bill penders
  • Update on patience i.e. direct visitors to client admission rooms,
  • Refer cases to other departments
  • Handing some cases to forces of law and order
  • Sending staff on relief duty
  • Settling misunderstanding between staff and clients, clients and other clients
